X Better
It doesn't have to be this way

Firstly the name 'social media' needs to go. It has all the possible negative connotations one can possibly imagine. Then what should it be called, I say nothing. It is simply X, no need to rush to define it. We don't understand the universe yet, so no need to define this yet.

(Hey, it is called the city center/ town hall. Yes, but sometimes I feel like it is a library, sometimes I feel like it eavesdropping on a person sharing their feelings, sometimes it is like reading a tabloid. So not exactly 'town-hall'ish, get the drift..?)

The biggest mole to whack would be to dial down the insult-thee attitude to fuel the X algo. There is a difference between 2 entities having a heated not-exactly civil discussion about a topic and random persons showing up hurling invectives at each other. Other than sounding moralising, it would be impossible to remedy this by directly appealing to humans. The only way out is for THE algorithm to step in. Agree, a ton of edge cases in here.

The users who got a huge following by sheer dint of being famous (or something else) should be encouraged to interact with the replies and not coast. Else, what is the community getting in return? This would a case of a person coming to the city center every few hours, lecturing and then leaving without interacting with anyone. Where is the parallel of this in the real world? The radio?

Bots and 'scheduled messages' should be labeled as such. Both serve a useful purpose but when not identified as such reduce the trust in the platform and from users interacting with each other. Why bots if not divuleged are harmful is obvious I believe but 'scheduled messages' inflict the same harm. It is one thing for companies/ indie hackers to schedule a message to time with a product release, and another to schedule messages which look like personally said in the moment. The 2nd scenario is disingenuous because in my excitement and enthusiasm if I reply instanteously to such a message I have effectively engaged with a bot.

And to round it up, going to the first 'social media' point I made, if it is to be media of some kind, I believe there should be tools available to make it so. I had to render this news-article like look through css and html, because the inbuilt X article does not support for doing so. The couple of times I messaged X about fixing the latex rendering, I believe it is still in their to-do list.
